Building on Faith 5Building on Faith, the Bill Barrett Legacy House

Each year, Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity celebrates partnership with the faith community with a season of building we call Building on Faith. Groups from all faith backgrounds build side by side, working to complete a home. We are glad to be partnering with the Barrett family as the sponsor for this year’s Building on Faith house, which will be built in honor of long-time Habitat volunteer and champion Bill Barrett (pictured, right). We look forward to building this summer with the Barrett family, their church family from University Place Presbyterian Church and all the other local congregations and faith groups that support Building on Faith each year.

Building on Faith 7Meet the homeowner: Sara

Sara grew up in Tacoma, the youngest of four children. When she was eight years old her mother passed away and her dad raised Sara and her siblings on his own.

The family went to church every Sunday with her grandmother. They attended Covenant Celebration Church (now Champions Centre) until her grandmother also passed.

“We didn’t lose our faith,” says Sara. “We just didn’t attend church regularly. We started more personal relationships with God.” For Sara, that relationship includes time devoted to prayer and to reading the Bible with her 12-year-old son, Deron.

Sara, who works in the medical field, describes apartment living as stressful. She shares that she has experienced two evictions. She and Deron are currently living with her brother whose own rental situation is tenuous.

She is looking forward to being in her Habitat home. “I don’t know what will happen when the eviction moratorium is lifted. I want my son to experience what I did growing up; I want him to have his own room, his own space.”
