Ways to Give

Gifts of Stock | Securities

Stocks and publicly traded securities are easy to give and offer great tax advantages. You can transfer ownership of stock, or mutual funds to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity by completing this form and sending it to both your broker and Habitat.

The best stocks to use for charitable giving are those that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. If you have held them for more than one year, you will pay no capital gains tax on this transaction, and you can deduct the full fair market value.

IRA Distributions

If you have an IRA and are at least 70 and half years old, you could make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to Tacoma Habitat, which would reduce your taxable income, count as a required distribution and help us build homes. Talk to your IRA custodian or tax advisor for more details on how this can work for you.

Legacy Gifts | Planned Giving

No matter your stage in life, it is important to reflect on the legacy you want to leave your community and future generations.  Your planned gift to Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity will further the Habitat mission after your lifetime; it is your legacy to the children and families in our community.

Some options include:

  • A bequest in your will or living trust, leaving Habitat a percentage of an asset or a specific amount. Download this document for sample language to include in your will.
  • A Charitable Gift Annuity, creating fixed income for your or a loved one’s remaining lifetime.
  • Beneficiary designation on a life insurance policy or a retirement account.
  • A Charitable Remainder Trust, paying the donor (and one or more other named beneficiaries, if desired) a fixed or variable income depending on the type of trust selected.
  • Charitable Lead Trust, paying income to one or more charitable organizations, typically for a period of years, and then the remaining assets of the trust pass to non-charitable beneficiaries, such as family members.

We encourage you to contact your financial adviser, attorney or accountant prior to making or structuring a planned gift in order to consider the best option for you.

If you have already made arrangements for a planned gift or will do so in the future, please let us know. It is not necessary to disclose a dollar value for your plans, but having some idea of the details allows us to plan for the future.

The Difference You Make

"When you’re desperate or in need, you don’t always feel that there’s a lot of hope. Tell donors that they are providing hope and an opportunity for people to have a life that they probably wouldn’t have imagined."
