In honor of Dr. Thomas

in House Sponsor

At the American Lake Townhome development in Tillicum, the first walls raised were at the Dr. Claudia Thomas Legacy Homes—two units sponsored in honor of Dr. Thomas and her contributions to the City of Lakewood and its people. Organizers Andi Gernon and Ellie Wilson were on hand for the festivities on August 26, along with Dr. Thomas’ daughter Lisa Boyd and her husband David, and other supporters of the fundraising campaign. Lending the muscle was a volunteer team from Tacoma Public Utilities, including CEO Jackie Flowers. The cherry on top of a wonderful day was that future homeowner Janeta and her children were on hand to mark the beginnings of their forever home.

Ellie Wilson spoke on behalf of the fundraising effort, saying “What an exciting moment this is!! To witness the first wall raising in this project of building twelve new townhomes in Tillicum!! And to dedicate the first two homes in honor of Dr. Claudia Thomas!

the late Dr. Claudia Thomas

Dr. Claudia Thomas was a devoted Army wife, a mother, grandmother, educator, activist and civic leader.  When she retired as Assistant Superintendent for the Bremerton School District, she devoted her efforts, along with General Bill Harrison, to laying a strong foundation with the first Lakewood City Council. Claudia was committed to her civil duties and passionate about our children, youth and their families. She insisted that 1% of our city budget be dedicated to social services and those less fortunate in our community.

Dr. Claudia Thomas initiated Lakewood’s Human Service Collaboration, Lakewood’s Youth Council, the first Youth Summit… brought General Colin Powell’s national youth movement ‘Five Promises’ to Lakewood and was a staunch supporter of Communities in Schools. She was a model of service and hope for our youth.

Dr. Claudia Thomas was known for bringing diverse groups of people together and here we are together on this very worthwhile project of affordable homes for our community.  It is fitting that we should honor Claudia Thomas and her legacy in this way.  Thank you to today’s volunteers from Tacoma Public Utilities as well as others who are here giving of their time.”
