Who We Are

Our Story

Using affordable homeownership as an anchor for hope, change, and stability, Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity has been building in the community since 1985.

We are committed to transforming neighborhoods—fighting blight and advocating for fair and just housing policies—while increasing access to affordable homeownership for hard working families and providing access to resources so homeowners can improve their lives and their communities.

Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a global, nonprofit housing organization that seeks to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities, and hope.

What We Stand For

Our Mission

Seeking to put God’s love into action, we partner with people to achieve and preserve homeownership and to build generational wealth, hope, and opportunity.

Our Vision

To build and foster thriving communities where everyone has a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home, with strong futures for all.

Our Values

Homeownership – We believe in the power of people working side by side with volunteers to achieve homeownership, change lives, improve communities, and build hope and generational wealth that can break the cycle of poverty.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion – We recognize there are systemic racial injustices in society.  We believe these must be addressed and overcome in our practices, our programs, and our advocacy.

Partnership – We build authentic partnerships with people we serve, as well as churches and other faith communities, corporations, community organizations, and volunteers who help us build thriving communities.

Stewardship – We are responsible to our community and accountable to our donors, partner families, and volunteers to achieve excellence and the efficient use of our resources.

Non-Proselytizing Policy

While Habitat for Humanity is a Christian organization, we will not proselytize. Nor will Habitat work with entities or individuals who insist on proselytizing as part of their work with Habitat.

This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must adhere to or convert to a particular faith or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith.

What We Do

Strategic Plan, 2024-2026
Who We Serve

Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity partners with a rich diversity of people to build and own affordable homes in safe communities.

Habitat homebuyers earn no more than 80% of the Area Median Income and meet our eligibility requirements.

As active participants in building a better future for themselves, and their families, Habitat homebuyers make a minimal down payment and pay an affordable mortgage.

Homebuyers also attend classes in financial literacy and asset building, in preparation for becoming homeowners.

At every stage of the program, homebuyers must be willing to work hard – knowing that everything they do serves their future.

Where We Build

Tacoma/Pierce County Habitat for Humanity serves all of Pierce County. Homes have been built in Tacoma, Midland, Tillicum, Gig Harbor and on the Key Peninsula.

Depending on availability of land, Habitat sometimes builds a neighborhood (5-30 homes) and other times we build single homes on scattered plots of land in existing neighborhoods.

Every home changes a life.

"I am just happy that I am able to give my kids stability and a future. They’ll know this has been my room since I was two years old or thirteen years old. That’s just a dream come true: The American Dream."
